Element determination in oil and additives

Metal-organic compounds are included into antiwear, oxidation inhibitors, washing, antirust, antiwelding additives. There are Ca. Zn, P, S most often in the additive compounds, rarely met are Ba, Mo, Cu, Si compounds.

Concentration of the elements in oils and additives are significantly higher that the spectrometer sensitivity, therefore XRFA can be used for the problem solution. The concentration range can be very wide due to possible dilution of concentrated samples.

There are two standards specifying XRF analysis of oils and additives: ASTM D4927-10 ”Standard Test Methods for Elemental Analysis of Lubricant and Additive Components–Barium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Zinc by Wavelength-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy” and ASTM D6443-10 “Test Method for Determination of Calcium, Chlorine, Copper, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Zinc in Unused Lubricating Oils and Additives by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry“ (Mathematical Correction Procedure).

The procedure of analysis is simple and similar for all tasks. 20 cm3 of the test material is required for analysis (two concurrent measurements) including reserve amount. Viscous products shall be liquefied either by heating or by dilution with mineral oil.

The test material is filled in the sample cups and put in spectrometer. Analysis is carried out automatically according to the program, metal content calculation is run with preliminary obtained calibration curve. If the sample was diluted then the result is multiplied by the corresponding coefficient.
