Sulfur determination in automobile fuel EN ISO 20884:2004

The standard EN ISO 20884:2004 «Petroleum products - Determination of sulfur content of automotive fuels - Wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry».
This standard specifies a wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) test method for determination of sulfur content of liquid, homogeneous automotive fuels from 5 mg/kg to 500 mg/kg, which have a maximum oxygen content of 2.7% (m/m). This product range covers diesel fuels containing up to 5% (V/V) fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and motor gasolines.

No sample preparation is required.
The test material is placed into a sample cup and exposed to primary X-ray tube emission. Countrate of S-Kα and background emission is measured. Sulfur content is determined with calibration curve for the given concentration range.
The test method provides sulfur content determination in the range from 5 up to 500 mg/kg with the following precision parameters.

Repeatability r
The difference between two test results obtained by the same operator with the same apparatus under constant operating conditions on identical test material would, in the long run, in the normal and correct operation of the test method, exceed the following values in only one case in 20.

Reproducibility R
The difference between two single and independent test results obtained by different operators working in different laboratories on identical test material would, in a long run , in normal and correct operation of the test method, exceed the following values in only one case in 20.
