Lead determination in automobile benzene

ASTM D 5059-07 «Standard test methods for lead in gasoline by X-ray spectroscopy».
The test method covers the determination of the total lead content in automotive gasoline within the range from 2.6 mg/l up to 1.32 g/l by X-ray wavelength dispersive spectroscopy.

The test method specifies three methods of lead determination.
Test method A covers high lead content determination in the range from 0.026 up to 1.32 g/l with application Bismuth as an internal standard. Background is not subtracted under the lead line.
Thirst test method covers high lead content determination in the range from 0.026 up to 1.32 g/l  with application of background standard. Incoherently scattered tungsten radiation from the X-ray tube anode is used as the background standard.
Second test method specifies low lead content determination in the range from 0.0026 up to 0.132 g/l with application of Bismuth internal standard. Background under the lead line is subtracted.
No special sample preparation is required.
The test material is placed in a sample cup in spectrometer. Analysis is carried out automatically according to the program, lead content calculation is run with preliminary obtained calibration curve.
The test method specifies determination lead in the range from 0.0026 up to 1.32 g/l with the following precision parameters.

Repeatability r
The difference between two test results obtained by the same operator with the same apparatus under constant operating conditions on identical test material would, in the long run, in the normal and correct operation of the test method, exceed 1.3 mg/kg in only one case in twenty.

Reproducibility R
The difference between two single and independent test results obtained by different operators working in different laboratories on identical test material would, in a long run , in normal and correct operation of the test method, exceed 2.0 mln-1 in only one case in 20.
